heavy backpacks

I have this problem all the time. I have so many heavy books to carry around that sometimes it's almost impossible. I started getting books on DAISY format to put on my laptop. That lightened my load considerably. If any one else has any ideas on how to lighten backpacks I'm open.
thanks

Hmmm! Backpacks can be pretty heavy things anyway, whether you like it or not. I've just bought a new laptop and a new rather chunky heavyweight backpack for it from PC World last weekend. I think the only way you'll get round this problem with the heavy backpacks and books, is to get one of those backpacks which has a waist strap as well as the straps over your shoulder so it feels as though it weighs lighter. My new laptop bag for example, has straps over the shoulder, a waist strap and also a strap across your chest, so it's not just my shoulders that'll bear all the weight. It's my back as well.

I bought a big wheely army backpack in high school. My classmates did not like it but I loved it. I never had to worry and had plenty of room for everything to fit.

I fought using a backpack for the longest time. Now, I absolutely love them. I've been known to go on job interviews in a suit and carrying a backpack. I agree with the second post. The better backpacks are more expensive, but your back will really thank you in the long run. My wife bought me one two years ago. I've carried a CD player, audio mixer, boots, and the miscelaneousjunk that usually goes into a backpack never to see the light of day again.

Same here Lou. When I was at College though, we couldn't find a backpack big enough for Braille files and books, so I had this really chunky heavy leather shoulderbag/satchel for them, followed later by an even heavier leather laptop case when I got my first Windows 98 Sony laptop. Those cases're the worst thing to carry round with you all day.

Well, let's see. I remember carrying a braille copy of Hamlet under my arm and falling down steps. When I wasn't doing that, I had a satchell type bag in which I carried my flute and tape recorder. I carried a Perkins Brailler, because I was doing news in the radio station at college. Looking back at that, a heavy backpack doesn't seem like much these days, but I do see where it is a problem. Thanks for dredging up that memory for me.

Heavy backpack? huh, i got five classes and i have FIVE books, notebooks, folders, and a pile of papers to accompany those, so yeah, my backpack is so heavy. Maybe right after my graduation, i may have a broken back lolz jk jk But seriously, my backpack is over loaded with books. But i could still carry it.

Sylvia:
I defended the heavy backpack problem by purchasing a backpack with a strap that comes across your chest, and one that goes around your waste. It had padding to support your back and the shoulder straps were quite thick themselves. It might feel at first as though you're whering a back brace or something but it really, really helped with the loads of stuff I carted around.

ah jessica, I used one of those wheeleyones for all of high school. Now, I don';t carry a backpack, cuz I bearly have any classes, so I considered it unnecessary baggage for the time being.

I carried a backpack all the way through elementary school. It wasn't until middle school that I started dragging a backpack on wheels with me. Even that luxury didn't always lighten the load. I remember some nights bringing at least three bags of books home just to get the homework done. Thank God for electronic text and audio devices that won't have you begging for a chiropractor.

I use a backpack on wheels and I love it! when I was in high school I used a book bag on wheels and when I was going home I would put what I needed in another book bag so I just put it on my shoulders and that helped to lighten the load.

I always had a monsterously heavy backpack throughout highschool... Textbooks, laptop, papers, papers, and more papers... It wasn't fun. By grade 12 I had it down to just a laptop and papers to be scanned, and that's what I expect for University (starting in a month), except I may have an audio recorder of some sort as well. I've found some really nice laptop bags... I'm not sure if I want to go right back to a backpack yet, but I'll always have the backpack just in case.

e-text textbooks are the best thing ever!

Are there any text books that you could leave at home, if you don't have to have in class all the time? or you could save stuff on your memory stick and stuff.

In middle school I had to carry all my books because we weren't allowed to carry backpacks around because of overcrouding issues. In high school I had lots of books and i would just cary about half of them. Now for college I just take my laptop mostly and all my books are in DAISY or eletronic format.

well, after each period is over why not stop by your locker, put in the books that you will not, and go to class.

i had to carry heavy backpack through grammar school and high school. but once i went to college, it was light, but not as much because i carry my laptop. its an IBM laptop and its pretty darn heavy. and i have to walk long distances to go to class

Post 21 by Reyami (I've broken five thousand! any more awards going?) on Saturday, 15-Sep-2007 8:30:29

depends on how far your locker is from the classroom. and anyway, in college, you get class schedules, I guess, so you know which books to bring, unless they're all in electronic format and on a laptop, so you can just bring the whole thing with you without worrying about breaking your back.

Post 22 by Puggle (I love my life!) on Saturday, 15-Sep-2007 8:46:44

when I was in high school my back pack weighed 11 kgs, so about 24 25 lbs. it was heavy! I still have sholder trouble because of it. I now have a braille note, and try to get as much as I can in electronic format.

Post 23 by TheAsianInvasion (The Zone's invader) on Wednesday, 17-Oct-2007 23:47:14

that's why roling backpacks are my best friend now. lol yeah they can get pritty heavy with the braille books, binders, note taker, and what ever the hell else I can find to put in it for my intertaining of the day aftir school

Post 24 by matt02392 (Veteran Zoner) on Wednesday, 31-Oct-2007 13:17:03

I still use a standerd back pack. I have about 4 or 5 brail books in there, plus a couple of ring binders. And i carry a lap top case with a 5 year old tosheba satalite pro laptop. I must admit. I would love a brail note. But money is a problem.

Post 25 by battle star queen (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 02-Jan-2008 9:27:05

I carried a standard back pack all through elimentary school and middle school. Also in middle school I had to carry the brailler because the darn vi staff wouldn't let one stay in some of my classes. I switched to a rolling bag in high school and let me say i loved the thing. But when I moved back to ny during the second half of my seenioor year of high school it was back tio the same crap i had to deal with in middle school but minus having to carry the brailler around.

Hi.

I use a BrailleNote, and an Icon braille+ when my braille note acts up or breaks.

I use a victor x+, and not to be lazy (just curious about this).

I heard you could put books onto your braille note from rfbd. How does one do this.

Then I wouldnt need all them cd's in this case. How I do it is like this.

You know those cases that hold like 25 cd's? Well, I extract the cd's from the sleaves they come in, label the holder (i.e. history, and pu the cd in the sleave in the older) so I don't have to carry those little packaging stuff the rfbd books come in. Seriously I would kill for an answer about this rfbd on the braille note thing...

And of course I use this little messenger bag. It's basically a bag with a strap so I usually wear it like you would a BrailleNote around yourr neck. It used to break my back when i was in 6th grade but now I'm in 7thgrade and it's lighter. Either that or i've gotten stronger, which is highly unlikely lol.
regards,
Andy

My folks thought of this and this might help you. My folks asked for two sets of books, a home set and a school set. My backpack is still heavy, though. I am the kind of person who over packs. Yeah, so I use one on wheels.
